A leading scholar of North Korea is calling for the release of a high school dropout who disappeared nearly 20 years ago from his home country.

General Pak Chol-hyeo, who was arrested in 1989, was said by the authorities to have been an active fighter in the communist state's army and fought against Soviet troops in a brutal campaign in the Korean War.
South Korean media reports said he was arrested in the early 1990s, along with six others, after defecting from his village in North Korea and being trained by a young North Korean leader.
But a North Korean defector in South Korea, Kim Jong Nam, told The Associated Press on Friday that the three prisoners were kept in their village in the late 1990s while awaiting the birth of their daughter and were then transferred to the custody of the North Korean authorities.
"Kim Jong Nam confirmed their captivity at the hands of his father, who had sent them on the way from his home province of Zhejiang province to visit his mother who was now living in Pyongyang," Mr Kim said.
Mr Kim, who had worked for an intelligence firm in the late 1990s before founding his own private security company, said the three prisoners were moved to two different units, while in another unit they were held in solitary confinement.
North Korea claims to hold more than 150,000 people, most of them defectors who have fled their homes since fleeing communist rule in the late 1960s.
Mr Kim said his father was "uncooperative when his son was under serious attack by enemy soldiers and soldiers with the Korean People's Army" before his death.
The general had been on his way to visit relatives when he was detained, the general said.
It is not clear what led to General Pak's arrest.
He has never been seen publicly since, in any interviews or interviews with anyone, except for a brief appearance in a documentary on North Korea's TV channel which aired in 2010.
But North Korean sources have confirmed that his son was among the three who were detained in 1989, according to two North Korean journalists who have served in Pyongyang over the past few years.
A statement from a spokesman for the North Korean government said General Pak, a former military intelligence officer, had not been under threat since his capture.

Titans to get tough on fitness before season begins
Titans backrower Will Chambers will be ready to start training with the squad on Saturday for what promises to be an intense pre-season training camp with the squad.
Titans boss Paul McGregor has already said he will put the club's fitness system in place for next year's campaign and have made it clear he will expect him to perform during a series of warm-up matches throughout the pre-season.
However, with four players not set to take part in pre-season until June, this could allow the club to keep another two up front.
The team was in a different state on Monday when former Roosters lock Trent Barrett was unavailable after suffering a concussion at Eden Park on Sunday night.
McGregor believes Barrett's absence, which will see his role increased when Boyd re-signs, is an indication he will be available for next Sunday's game against the Panthers.
"We're a bit worried there but I think in time he will be back to his best," McGregor told reporters on Monday afternoon.
"He needs to train more and do more reps, especially on the ball. I'm not worried.
"He's got to keep himself going so you have to keep him under control from now until the weekend."
Barrett is expected to miss at least three weeks of the season while rookie Josh Dugan, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing the Roosters in round 15, will likely miss three weeks as well.
"It's not about if he's available. He's had a problem with it so far but he's got to work out what he can do now and that'll do him good," McGregor said.
It is believed Dugan could make the club's first selection in this year's Australian Grand Prix.
But, as a precaution, McGregor has placed the squad back on full fitness ahead of what is expected to be a pre-season of the kind that preceded last season when a long list of senior players including Boyd, Cameron Smith, Ben Cooper and Cameron Cullen were absent.
The pre-season, which the Titans have played in for more than 20 years, will include five-a-side and four-a-side club competition and will feature a trip to Penrith, Wests Tigers and the Brisbane Broncos before returning to the Parramatta Stadium where Titans last played in the 2014 season.
